Young People Big Dreams 2021

Power U Center for Social Change's Annual Fundraiser Returns

On Dec. 11, 2021, at 7 p.m., Power U Center For Social Change will hold their annual fundraiser "Young People Big Dreams" (YPBD) at Glassbox Ironside in Little River, Miami. Power U members, supporters, and community members are welcome to attend an evening celebrating the organization's work for the past year. During the fundraising event, there will be live music by Aura Jones and Kamari Esson, distinguished awards, raffle prizes, in addition to a complimentary gourmet dinner and open bar. Tickets are available now at https://poweru.org/ypbd21

Young People Big Dreams is Power U's unique annual fundraising event which brings together all of the organization's supporters to highlight the work of the people involved. Those in attendance have the opportunity to connect for the first time since 2019. While at YPBD, there will be opportunities for those in attendance to make donations. Several individuals who have shown engagement over the past year will receive distinctive honors for their effort.

"Power U held out strong and rose to new levels over this past year. Despite combating against a global pandemic, membership got closer and hit the ground running," says Sumaiyah Wade, a High School Senior and Power U Member. The organization will use this time to continue to build resilience with the surrounding community with the hopes to continue to advocate for changes in our community and schools in the upcoming year.

About Power U

Power U Center Social Change (Power U) was co-founded in 1999 by community organizers, Denise Perry and Sheila O'Farrell. Formerly based in Miami's Historic Black Community, Overtown, and now in Liberty City, the organization has a history working to end the school to prison pipeline in Miami-Dade, as well as health disparities that occur in our communities. The organization is currently focusing on seeking change for families in Miami Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) by advocating for increased resources that support students and families in the School Board budget. Power U creates spaces for parents, teachers, students, and community members to get behind specific campaign goals in alignment with items on the MCDPS budget.
