University of Missouri & Gig.U Develops Ultra High Speed Internet for the Benefit of the City

Online, August 3, 2011 (Newswire.com) - The city of Columbia and the officers of University of Missouri announces their joint venture to make use of the city's national resources to ultimately assemble an ultra high speed internet network for each and every home in the city. This joint venture, known as "Gig.U: The University Community Next Generation Innovation Project" partners with research institutions and city officers with the endeavor of building effective networks that supports new idea, ingenuity and economic growth such as the mentioned project.

According to MU Chancellor Brady Deaton, "We are excited about this opportunity to build the future capacity and infrastructure for a knowledge-based economy in Missouri. Although this project is still in its initial process, this new settlement may result to more research grants and attracting more companies to relocate to this city, generate more jobs for its locals and eventually improving its local and state's economy.

Presently, the expenditure for providing ultra high-speed internet network is too much for most communities and internet service providers to sustain. Through the "Gig.U" partnership, University of Missouri's researchers and city officers will work hand in hand with internet service providers to distinguish the necessary internet infrastructure in building an ultra high-speed network for the community.

University of Missouri and the city of Columbia works with over 30 research institutions and the local communities for this project. The needed funds to support the 1st phase of this project has already been divided to the city, University of Missouri and MORENet wherein everyone hopes for it to lead to more grants for the research and the community's infrastructures.

At the completion of this project, researchers and its colleagues will greatly benefit, students will get instant updates of the latest knowledge on different subject matters, individuals and companies will also be able to enhance their system and bring them closer to success or new discoveries for the city's market place.

"Gig.U" consist of different charter members along with University of Missouri are University of Michigan, Duke University, Penn State University, University of Chicago, Case Western Reserve University, University of Virginia, University of Louisville, University of Kentucky, University of Virginia, Indiana University, Arizona State University, Michigan State University, University of Alaska, North Carolina State University, University of Maryland, University of Hawaii, University of Florida and West Virginia University.
