Snelling’s Clusterf*ck installations are a combination of sculptures, video projections, lights, rugs, kitsch, images, and odd accessories. The installations are immersive experiences that place the viewers at the simultaneous conjunction of a multitude of different, sometimes opposing, cultures. Is it a view into the future world we will live in? A psychedelic Version of a “Blade Runner” scene? Or perhaps the clutter in one’s own mind?

This version of Clusterf*ck will by my messiest and craziest to date.

Video clips from Bollywood, rap musicians, Jamaican dance clubs, and a call to prayer, among other clips, will overlap and compete in an aural and visual chaos with the soundtracks and videos from the jumble of sculptures in the space. The all-encompassing quality of the installation is designed to both over stimulate the and viewers and seduce/ensnare them.

Clusterf*ck 3 will feature detritus from the artist’s studio as she prepares to leave stateside for a long residency in Berlin. The accumulation of objects, books, old magazines, and props that lived in her studio for many years will be incorporated into the mess of Clusterf*ck 3, adding an intimate layer to the installation. At the end of the exhibition, visitors will be allowed to take from the remnants, participating in the recycling of her effects into new objects of curios in their own spaces.

“This version of Clusterf*ck will by my messiest and craziest to date,” says Snelling.

Snelling is also a recent recipient of the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation’s 2015 Painters and Sculptors Grant, in the amount of $25,000.

Snelling’s other new installation One Thousand Shacks is a 17 foot x 10 foot wall of small scale shack sculptures with video, sound, and lights, meant to draw awareness to the issue of extreme global poverty. The installation was wait listed for Art Miami Basel Positions 2015. A portion of the future sale of the installation will go to TECHO, a foundation seeking to overcome poverty in settlements in Latin America.

In 2016/2017, Snelling will have a solo exhibition at Krupic Kersting Galerie in Cologne, group exhibitions in the New York, Brussels, Havana, and the Netherlands, a public art project in San Francisco, and a sculpture commission at the Historical Museum of Frankfurt.

Snelling’s work derives from sociological explorations of various cultures, voyeurism, film, and geographical and architectural location. Within this idea of location, themes develop of a particular locale’s inhabitants: Who are these people? What do they do and why do they do it? These questions transport observation into the realm of storytelling.

Her core skill as an artist is to capture the essence of time and place. Combining sculpture, video, lights, sound, and sometimes even water and smell, they capture a place and people at a specific time in history. Film, installation, and photography further aid in her cultural exploration, and are often combined to demonstrate this. The melding of the foreign with the familiar fuels her work and creates a rich and multi-layered experience.
