The Facts About Aspergers on NBC Show Parenthood

Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK March 3rd 2011 - The Parenting Aspergers Community features advice, support and techniques for parents of children with Aspergers, who face challenges like those recently seen on the hit NBC show Parenthood.

On this week's episode of parenthood Adam and Kristina (parents) try to explain Asperger's to their son Max. This issue was forced by Max overhearing a conversation recently where it was mentioned that he had Aspergers.

According to Dave Angel (founder of The Parenting Aspergers Community) "This is a very real life situation for many parents, who often struggle to know what to say, how to say it, and when to do so."

What to say - All children with Aspergers need to know of their diagnosis, so they can begin to understand and make sense of the various things that they are experiencing in their life.

How to say it - Explanations of Aspergers will vary from child to child, but important factors to consider are both their age and level of understanding. As well as this the parent should be honest but as positive as possible in their explanation.

When to say it - Dave Angel says that "Children should be told of their Aspergers diagnosis as soon as possible in order to begin working with them on what this means for them, and gaining positive outcomes".
