Tesla Motors to Introduce Electric Cars in India- What Is Its Scope?

Tesla Motors is going to launch Model 3 electric car into Indian markets in 2017. However, it may face few challenges, yet have bright chances of attracting customers.

Now when the world is moving towards going ‘green’, and fighting pollution, electric vehicles (EV) have become the silver lining to the clouds. For India, the prospect of electricity-run automobiles may seem fetching with Mahindra & Mahindra Reva already making its mark. But, the concept has not created a big impact on the audience. This may change with Tesla Motors, Inc. venturing the Indian markets with its Model 3 electric car soon. According to market research reports, this U.S based company recorded $3,198.4 million revenue in FY2014.

While it has established roots in foreign land, Tesla Motors needs to get its brand rolling for the Asian giant. The EV manufacturer aims to introduce Model 3 to India, South Africa, Brazil, Singapore, Ireland, New Zealand, and Slovakia. It has already allowing people from these countries to book the car on its website. Model 3 would be the cheapest cars offered by the company. Elon Musk, the founder of the group however may face some obstacles for its car in India.

Challenges Imported Electric Cars Face in India

The nations lacks infrastructure to support EV, and as per common man the system for such cars is next to zero. For such vehicles to work in India, citizens will have to charge it at their home. But, the charging infrastructure is not available equally at different locations. Thus, the car owner will have no option but to charge EV with other car in vicinity. Those who do use EV can charge it once, and it will be sufficient for trip twice between home and office. As the car does not require an internal combustion engine, it has a lot of room for storage at back and the front.

·         Lack of Power-Stations: The group looks forward to establish supercharging network around the country, which will enable people to use its automobile better and over larger distances. A SWOT analysis on Tesla Motors reveal more challenges in coming years, especially regarding harnessing energy in the nation for the charging stations. Probably the company is thinking in right direction, and according to their timeline; Model 3 may be up for sale by the late 2017. Delays have already plagued the firm, but being positive is the best thing to do.

·         Costs and Heavy Duty: However, springing up power-stations within 2 years seems a task next to impossible because shortage of resources and huge investments requirement. Tesla has a plant in Netherlands or USA, but India incurs heavy duty on EV or cats imported from foreign countries as CBU units. This will raise the car cost tremendously. Locally manufactured EV in the country is subsidized by the government, but no decision for such a facility for imported EVs is in the mind of the country officials.

·         Insufficient Energy Production: India faces the problem of inability of supplying electricity to every part of its regions. Not all households have electricity support 24x7. Some rural regions encounter power outrages throughout the year, especially in monsoon and summer, accounting to 8-12 hours power cut in a day. In such an event, how the country will meet energy production for Tesla Motors’ supercharging station is a big question mark.

Road Ahead for EVs in the Nation

It is to be seen how Tesla Motors will shape its market in the country. In other regions, the people charge the car with electricity collected from solar panels. To harness sufficient energy, the country and the company together will have to increase power-plants based on solar, wind and hydro energy, and make the same accessible to people at several places over the country, so that users can operate the car appropriately.

In September 2015, Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India did meet Elon Musk at U.S.A factory. Perhaps, they discussed about solar Powerwall technology, and maybe the country is keen on accommodating the Model 3 and its scope by finding efficient alternatives to the traditional fuels.
