Son of Father Who Died From Complications of COVID Vaccine Plans Tribute Film Called SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS

Novelist, screenwriter, and podcaster Jaime Clarke (We're So Famous, Vernon Downs, World Gone Water, Garden Lakes, Typical) lost his father, Douglas Clarke, in July 2022 to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare blood disease that causes an overactive immune system to attack the body, a disease he acquired after receiving the mRNA vaccine for SARS-CoV-2. While an extremely rare side effect, HLH after COVID-19 vaccination has been documented by the National Institutes of Health, the British Medical Association, and others.

"My father battled the effects of HLH for ten months prior to his passing, which included a two-month stay in the hospital, followed by rehab and multiple readmittances and emergency room visits," says Clarke. "At his side while a battery of confounded doctors worked to unravel this new mystery, I often talked with my father about the films we loved, and also about Arizona, where we lived in the 1980s and 1990s, before I moved to Boston and he followed postretirement to be closer to his only grandchild."

Clarke's screenplay Sorry for Your Loss tells the stories of multigenerational characters in Phoenix at the end of the 1980s. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has been created to raise funds to make the film and will run from Father's Day, June 18, through July 14, 2023, the day Clarke's father passed. "The idea was inspired by Robert Downey Jr.'s documentary about his father, which I watched while consumed with grief over my own father's death," Clarke says. "And also by my father's keen interest in film since his youth. As a kid growing up in Montana, he was always behind the latest camera, documenting his friends and our family as it grew.

"As my brothers and I anticipate our first Father's Day without him, we hope people will consider funding this film as a tribute to my father's legacy, which is that of someone who did what was asked of him, who put others before himself, whose default qualities were kindness, humility, and humor."
