Shots Fired On U-Texas Campus; One dead - UPI.com

Police in Austin, Texas, said they were trying to eliminate the likelihood of a second suspect in a University of Texas campus shooting in which a gunman died.

Police in Austin, Texas, said they were trying to eliminate the likelihood of a second suspect in a University of Texas campus shooting in which a gunman died.

University of Texas Police Chief Robert Dahlstrom said officers were concerned about a second suspect based on varying witness reports, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

"We will work all those leads through," Dahlstrom said during a news conference, adding that SWAT officials and dogs trained to sniff explosives were employed as a precaution.

The university's Web site told students: "The person involved in this morning's shooting on campus has been confirmed dead on the sixth floor of the Perry-Castaneda Library from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The campus was on lockdown and all organized classes were canceled Tuesday, the advisory said.

"If you are off campus, stay away. If you are on campus, lock your doors and do not leave your building," it said.

Dahlstrom said shots were reported fired at a second location, the Statesman-American said. Witnesses said they saw the gunman shooting near the Littlefield Fountain.

Officials say apparently no other people were injured.

A motive has not been reported.

Campus spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon said witnesses had reported the man was armed with an automatic weapon. Police said an AK-47 has been recovered.

Alicia Dietrich, public affairs assistant with the Harry Ransom Center, located near the library, told the American-Statesman she heard shots fired as she was parking her bike.

"I didn't even know for sure that it was gunshots," Dietrich said.
