Saving Your Time and Money: Social Security Disability Payments Have Gone Paperless

The Social Security Administration is in the process of switching their monthly payments to beneficiares from paper checks to electronic options.

Many people are aware that as of May 1, 2011, the Social Security Administration mandated that everyone who applies for benefits on or after this date must use either direct deposit or Social Security's Direct Express card to receive their monthly payments. What many people across the nation are not aware of is that by March 1, 2013 all beneficiaries, including those currently receiving benefits, must sign up for payments electronically.

Before May 1, 2011, applicants and beneficiaries had the choice of receiving the common monthly check in the mail from Social Security or signing up for direct deposit. However, Social Security realized that enforcing electronic payments made much more economic and environmental sense. It means that beneficiaries no longer have to wait for their check in the mail or risk having the check stolen, and they do not have to wait in line at the bank to cash their check. This new system is also much better for the environment.

Individuals have the option of signing up for direct deposit with the bank of their choice, or receiving a Direct Express prepaid debit card (which is convenient if you do not have a back account). Both selections are faster, safer, and easier ways of receiving your payments. According to Social Security, "as of March 2011, 85 percent of all Social Security and SSI beneficiaries received their benefits by direct deposit."

If you are interested in signing up for direct deposit, you must contact your bank first to inform them of this, and then contact the Social Security Administration by calling (800) 772-1213. You will be able to access your money as soon as it is deposited in your account. Each recipient will have their own PIN card to protect their account.

The days of paper checks have almost come to an end. For many, this is a big change, yet it is one that will result in much safer and economical payment processing for all.
