Russia and new domain registration requirements

The Russian registry (Coordination Center for TLD RU) took a drastic decision that will influence 'spammers' paradise' once more .

AMSTERDAM, 7th of April 2010. The Russian registry (Coordination Center for TLD RU) took a drastic decision that will influence 'spammers' paradise' once more . Following the Chinese examples from just a few weeks ago, this is expected to have a considerable influence on the amount of spam sent around the globe.

Currently, Russia is perceived as a safe place for spammers and scammers, but this image may become a thing of the past very soon. With China recently having adapted a leading example in the fight against cyber fraud, Russia decided a change of regulations for registering the top level domain .ru, which will contribute to get rid of their current image as 'spammers' paradise'. Since China has changed its regulations for registering the ccTOLD .cn, spam sent from China has been reduced by more than 50%.

"By anonymously registering a Chinese top level domain, spammers could easily continue their activities without the risk of being caught.", according to Silvia Ott of the email security company SpamExperts. "By not having to expose their details and location, nobody would ever find them and thus ease the process for sending out spam. This has recently changed in China, and now it is Russia's turn!".

The fight against spam remains a great challenge. With the continuous innovations and development of new strategies, spammers are hard to beat. However, the change in the Chinese regulations regarding registering the top level domain .cn showed that there is still hope for victory.
