Resurgence in Sales for Mid-Century Modern Homes in San Diego
La Jolla, CA, January 17, 2017 (Newswire.com) - In 2016, San Diego saw a resurgence in sales for mid-century modern homes, according to Amber Anderson, of Anderson, White & Associates at Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty. 2016 was a banner year for San Diego real estate, with limited housing inventory and continued low interest rates kept buyer demand strong, there was a mass appeal for mid-century inspired homes due to their clean lines, simplicity of design as well as open living spaces. According to Anderson, 24 of these architectural style homes sold in San Diego last year, with another 21 homes currently on the market.
Jan Horn, Executive Director of Pacific Sotheby’s Architectural Division, agrees. “San Diego has several areas which include large numbers of mid-century modern houses, such as Old Del Mar, La Jolla, the Hillcrest area of North Park, Point Loma, and Mission Hills.” While these classic homes have roots in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, Horn reports that San Diego architects have embraced mid-century modernism wholeheartedly.
These mid-century properties stand the test of time. They can be timeless where other styles can feel worn and tired within a few years yet mid-century can offer few clues as to the home's real age.

“I believe the reason more architects, builders, and developers haven’t designed and built more of these houses is that they are usually only one story and therefore smaller than the typical two story structure. These residences are more popular with singles and couples,” says Horn. He points to several architects that have embraced this style, including John Lloyd Wright, Loch Crane, Sim Bruce Richards, Homer Delawie, Russell Forester, Henry Hester, Frederick Liebhardt, Lloyd Ruocco, Herb Turner and Richard Wheeler.
Horn comments that it really is quite simple, “Mid-century modern houses is a style which has never been out of style. The trend today is to remodel these homes and renovate rather than tear them down. They are an integral part of San Diego’s history.”
Anderson points out to one of her newest mid-century modern listings, 2181 Belloc Ct, a North Pacific Beach home that truly embodies the mid-century modern architecture with a spacious open floor plan featuring vaulted ceilings and seamless integration to the outdoors. “The light and airy interiors, not to mention its ideal location with stunning views, pays homage to those great architects that made mid-century modern homes so revered today. Even traditionalists will appreciate the timeless beauty of this home,” Anderson says.
This stunning home will be open to the public on Sunday January 22nd, 2017 from 1-4pm.
