Pistols And Prayers" Returns to Oakland: Confirmed Five-Week Run Starting June 17th
Online, June 14, 2011 (Newswire.com) - OAKLAND, Calif. - Pistols and Prayers, the sociopolitical Hip-Hop theatre piece written and directed by Def Poet and Hip-Hop theater artist, Ise Lyfe, returns to Oakland for a limited engagement at 408 14th Street, Downtown Oakland beginning Friday, June 17. Tickets are available on the web at www.airbornetickets.com, by phone at 510-986-1900, or at the venue door.
Pistols and Prayers, a play based on the book, brings together spoken word, African-American folk spirituals, classical music, Hip-Hop and theatre. The provocative piece sold out the Tony Award winning Berkeley Repertory Theater during its premier in 2009.
Ise Lyfe places an autobiographical commentary against the historical backdrop of skewed American culture. "I've performed this play now in various parts of the country to so many different audiences and perspectives. It was born here though! As a play travels it grows and evolves, so I'm real excited to see how it feels and engages audiences back home in Oakland," says Ise Lyfe. "This will be the first time the piece has ran for 5 consecutive weekends, so that should be a lot of fun."
The production includes music from the internationally renowned harpist, Destiny, young master pianist, EJ Youngblood, DJ DC, and Geechi Taylor on the trumpet. Pistols and Prayers explores the impact and contributions of African Diaspora on the American and Urban American experience. "Although Pistols & Prayers can at times be raw and unflinching in its honesty, it's not irresponsible," says hip-hop journalist and historian, Davey D. "Ise speaks truthfully, passionately and vulnerably."
Pistols and Prayers runs Friday, June 17 through Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 408 14th St, Downtown Oakland. The performance schedule includes two shows on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and Sunday at 3 p.m. General admission tickets are $15 and $10 for the youth. Tickets are available on the web at www.airbornetickets.com, by phone at 510-986-1900, or at the venue door.
