Online, June 5, 2012 (Newswire.com) - The Perth Mint has unveiled the first design in its innovative Australian Map Shaped coin series.
To craft a coin in the distinctive shape of Australia requires the use of purpose-built tooling, hand finished dies and advanced minting techniques.
Perth Mint Sales and Marketing Director, Ron Currie, said that The Perth Mint was the first minting organisation to pioneer and perfect the Australian map shaped coin. "Out talented team of engineers developed special machinery to manufacture this unique coin to the highest standard," he said.
The new series showcases iconic Australian wildlife, which is characteristically a popular theme among coin collectors and gift buyers continued Mr Currie. "Australia's iconic fauna is recognised throughout the world, so we're delighted to launch the series with the much loved kookaburra."
Struck from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, this stunning coloured coin features a kookaburra resting on a fence against an outback scene. The inscription KOOKABURRA also appears in the design with The Perth Mint's traditional 'P' mintmark and the 2012 year-date.
Issued as Australian legal tender, the obverse of the coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Presented in a classic display case within an illustrated shipper and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, no more than 6,000 coins will be issued for sale worldwide.
