Non-Profit Represents Bay Area in Summer Institute Designed to Strengthen Global Health Teaching Practices

San Francisco-based NGO, Child Family Health International, Serves as Key Collaborator in Liberal Arts AAC&U Summer Institute Designed to Disseminate Practices for Instruction in Undergraduate Inter-Disciplinary Global Health

Child Family Health International, an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the UN ECOSOC, collaborated with professional organizations and universities on the “AAC&U 2017 Teaching Global Health: Summer Institute for Undergraduate Curriculum and Course Design.” The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, The Great Lakes Colleges Association, Allegheny College, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute all worked together on this faculty development workshop that is instrumental in creating teaching standards in the emerging discipline of Global Health.

Global Health is an expansive subject that requires competencies in intercultural skills, biological sciences and social sciences. These are vastly different fields and present a challenge when training students. The meeting had several areas of focus including tips on how to develop new global health courses, tools to strengthen undergraduate curricular programming in the field of global health, and conversations on the challenges and benefits of experiential learning.

"The institute served as a unique opportunity to bring together a diverse representation of experts and educators in a variety of fields that have significance for Global Health. The training that took place over the three-day workshop will go on to strengthen Global Health education at a collegiate level."

Jessica Evert, Executive Director of Child Family Health International explains, “The institute served as a unique opportunity to bring together a diverse representation of experts and educators in a variety of fields that have significance for Global Health. The training that took place over the three-day workshop will go on to strengthen Global Health education at a collegiate level. We are all learning to speak the languages of each other's disciplines, as well as that of global health — building a community of practice.”
