Online, October 14, 2010 (Newswire.com) - A Muslim author whose first novel includes a courtroom trial of God for crimes against humanity will speak at the Unitarian Universalists of Fallston in Fallston, Maryland from 11am to noon on October 24, 2010. In his novel, Resolution 786, Mohamed Mughal uses a literal and contextually selective interpretation of Biblical scripture to arrest, charge and try the Lord for the crimes of mass infanticide, homophobic genocide and felony animal cruelty.
Mughal's talk, titled The Good Guys vs. the Bad Guys, explores scripture and other literary sources to sample cultural notions of who's "good" and who's "bad." The author provides examples of typical characterizations of "bad guys" using current headlines, the writings of Martin Luther, quotes from Idi Amin, and passages from George Orwell's novel, 1984.
In his Theory of Special Relativity, Albert Einstein concluded that there are no privileged frames of reference. Mughal's discussion extrapolates this concept into a model of moral relativism that suggests that there are no intrinsically good or bad guys and that the designation is largely one of relative perspective. Mughal cites the villain-less writings of Kurt Vonnegut as an example of circumstances without bad guys.
When asked why he chose Unitarian Universalists as the audience for this talk, Mughal replied, "I've read the seven principles that Unitarian congregations affirm and promote, principles from the inherent worth and dignity of every person to respect for the interdependent web of all existence. I can't think of a more open-minded environment in which to share views on such debatable topics."
