Meeting in Mauritius: Transforming the Cane Sugar Industry

Online, September 2, 2014 (Newswire.com) - The Course, "Co-products : Transforming a cane sugar industry to a sugarcane industry" will take place in Mauritius at the Regional Training Centre in Reduit.

The objective of the course is to present and discuss chemical co-products that can be manufactured in the sugarcane industry, presented by the Course Leader, Dr Raoul Lionnet.

The Contents will incude the following themes:

• Introduction
• Utilisation of and co-products from bagasse
• Utilisation of and co-products from filter cake
• Utilisation of and co-products from vinasse
• Cane wax
• Bio plastics
• Caramels
• Liquid sugars
• Co-crystallisation
• Polyols
• Sucrates.

The target audience of the course are sugar industry employees as well as  anyone interested in learning more about the topic.

The ACP sugar research Programme, a European Union (Europe Aid/DEVCO)  provides solutions to the sugar industry in ACP countries, by responding to a selected number of clearly identified technological challenges that hamper the sugarcane sector's performance. A total of thirteen research and innovation projects are implemented under the Programme, covering three distinctive areas of research: (cane varieties, costs and losses cuttings).

The purpose of the programme is to assist the ACP Sugarcane Research Programme and its Steering Committee ; providing them with a Coordinating Unit to support five research stations (MSIRI, SIRI, SRIF, SSA, WICSBS) in attaining their goals and fostering networking among ACP research stations to strengthen their capabilities, increase communication and enhance the sharing of information and research outputs.
