97th District State Representative candidate, Jason Liptow's dedication to education was highlighted at the We The People of Mid-Michigan's "Meet the Candidate Night" on March 23rd in Auburn.
While answering a question concerning the rising costs of college, Liptow stated that "voucher systems for secondary schools which allow the money to follow the students might be one solution. Funding equity at the secondary college level ensures all state colleges and universities receive the same amount of per-pupil funding instead of the current system in which certain universities receive more than others." Liptow believes that equitable funding among public schools is also essential in grades K-12.
After the "disappearance" of the Promise Scholarship and Governor Granholm's recent announcement of possible 3% cuts in funding to state colleges, Liptow felt it was crucial a stance was taken.
"I want to make it clear that I am against cuts to education. Education is crucial for good jobs and retaining our citizens. It is becoming more and more expensive every year making it harder for students to attend college. Students shouldn't have to be deprived of a higher education if they are seeking it," Liptow said.
To further demonstrate his dedication to education, Liptow announced that if elected to office he will donate 10% of his salary each year to be evenly distributed to the scholarship funds of all schools in the 97th district.
"Our youth are an indispensible part of our district. I want others to see the importance of their education. Hopefully others may follow suit by contributing as little as $1 to local scholarship funds to help our students who want to attend college achieve their dream," Liptow said.
