A secret garden of Boston’s South End resides in the Courtyard at 46 Waltham Street, like an oasis even in this glorious neighborhood, just one block from SOWA. At the heart of this oasis is located the new J Jake Art Gallery.

From gallery owner, photographer J Jake Spitz, “My wife, Elaine, and I took the keys to this beautiful small gallery space at the end of the courtyard in September, and immediately felt at home. I’m a photographer who has been deeply influenced by Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts Impressionist collection. I love to use camera techniques that result in a photograph with an impressionistic look and feel. Historically running concurrently to the Impressionistic period was photography’s Pictorialist movement, where artistic photographers of the time were “painting with their cameras”. As a result, my photography is different from that of most others. I’m excited to have an opportunity to share my work.”

J Jake Spitz, Gallery Owner

46 Waltham is the former Vose Piano Factory on the corner of Washington and Waltham Streets, with 80,000 square feet of office and restaurant space, and is also home to over 90 artists’ studios.  Studios Patch NYC (eclectic artistic home decor, gifts, and jewelry, including original designs by Patch NYC principles, designers Don Carney and John Ross) and Melle Finelli Studios (contemporary art jewelry by jeweler/metalsmith Melissa Finelli, and other art objects) welcomed the J Jake Art Gallery to the courtyard space in late September. Despite modern updates for convenience and safety, the building retains some of its old Industrial charm.

Spitz recounts how he chose the name for his gallery: “My father was a Boston Firefighter, and Boston Firefighters are affectionately known as “Jake”. And their offspring, when I was a kid in the 1960s, were called “little Jake” by the other firefighters. Because of this tradition, my five brothers and I have the name “Jacob” as our middle name. I’ve always enjoyed telling that story, and thought J Jake (J for my actual first name, Joseph) an easy and distinctive name for my gallery.

Other artists featured at J Jake Art Gallery:

Patrice DeLorenzo, from her current home nestled in the San Juan Mountains in Durango, Colorado, paints dreamy landscapes from various vantage points in that area. Her work, mostly acrylic on canvas, seems a perfect complement to J Jake’s impressionistic style. DeLorenzo, a Massachusetts native, notes, “I use expressive color and brushwork to create the atmosphere and feel of a place, a thought, a memory.”

Spencer Kirk-Jackson, now a resident of Roslindale, recalls being an active nine-year-old when he was first stunned into stillness by the skills of hot glass artists in his native Sheffield, England. As a practitioner, he came to the glass-blowing field later in life and is grateful to be in Boston, with access to some of the greatest glass facilities in the Northeast.
