Interstate Removals A Priority For Brisbane Residents

(BRISBANE) Government experts said the city may have to suffer six more agonizing months before everything goes back to normal, after going through one of its most harrowing ordeals in history, signalling an unprecedented need for interstate removals

Kent International Movers, one of Australia's biggest moving companies, observed that a large number of Brisbane residents who fled to nearby cities like the Gold Coast or to bigger cities like Sydney and Melbourne, may have to lengthen their unexpected stay. Flood damage to their homes, along with the heightened risk for contracting waterborne diseases in the affected city, might make Brisbane a city too dangerous to live at for quite some time.

The city's more than two million residents fled the area en masse as the Brisbane River overflowed to record levels, inundating the city's central business district, Fortitude Valley and virtually the rest of the city. Experts commented that this is city's worst reported case of flooding in 100 years.

Some residents managed to bring their personal belongings to higher ground or other storage facilities in Brisbane, but were forced to leave them behind in a rush to get out of harm's way as quickly as possible.

Brisbane is Australia's third-largest city, next only to Sydney and Melbourne with respect to resident population. However, the city's centre today has become a virtual ghost town, as no single living soul is within sight.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh indicated that more than 40,000 homes would be affected by this disaster.

Earlier, Brisbane's Lord Mayor Campbell Newman reported that the city's flood modelling experts have projected that the flood, throughout its duration, will affect around 20,000 homes and 3,500 business establishments.

Eagle Street Pier, a world-famous dining spot, instantly went underwater when muddy water from the sewers rushed through the pathway and submerged the area within several hours. Fifty-thousand-seat Adowntown Stadium suffered a similar fate, after the gigantic structure turned into a miniature lake.

Interstate removals from Brisbane have become close to impossible, as public infrastructures were rendered useless by the rising waters. However, several moving companies, including Kent, have consolidated their resources in order to be able to help those in need.
