Merchants closed their shops, farmers left their fields, and soldiers left their posts. People of all nations descended on California in hopes of making a fortune, and they came by stagecoach, train, wagon, and boat, sailing around Cape Horn and hiking across the Isthmus of Panama.
The Gold Rush is the backdrop for "Treasures on Earth," R. J. Thomas' western novella, now making it's e-book debut.
"Treasures on Earth" is the story of Thomas Miller, a free-spirited Colorado gambler who comes to California to make his fortune. Miller had no desire to dig or pan for gold himself. He would simply play cards against those who did, newly-rich men anxious to spread their new-found wealth around, men who might not be as talented a gambler as he.
But Miller finds more than he bargained for as he is swept up by one adventure after another.
His California-bound stagecoach is robbed, he is asked by a pushy outlaw to join a gang of bank robbers, he falls for a lovely widow, he is constantly getting the widow's brother out of trouble, he befriends a gunslinger who's too talented a shot for his own good, and he joins a posse to catch a flamboyant Mexican bandit. And these are just a few of his tales.
