Floating Islands in the Maldives

In a bid to tackle environmental concerns over rising water levels that are affecting the Maldives, the small island nation has come up with a rather ingenious way to overcome this problem, in a way that will boost tourism to the country.

In a futuristic feat of architecture by expert company Dutch Docklands, the problem of rising sea levels, which experts are worried will eventually leave the Maldivian islands sinking below sea level has potentially been solved. The company have been in talks with the president of the Maldives to build artificial islands which will float - making them completely safe from storms, and will be anchored to the seabed using cables or telescopic mooring piles.

This may sound like it will cause its own environmental problems (safety of the seabed and conservation of marine life and coral reef), however this has been thoroughly considered by the architectural company. The islands will be made in the Middle East and India and towed to their final destination in the Maldives to reduce damage, and they will build lots of small islands so as not to affect shadow on the seabed.

CEO of the company Paul van de Camp said of the project 'We told the president of the Maldives we can transform you from climate refugees to climate innovators'. The project will be completely green and sustainable, and will put great focus on protecting marine life.

This will also be a fantastic innovation for the ordinary Maldivian as well as the tourist industry as around 43 islands are set to be built which will create many jobs and housing. The first of these islands, the first ever floating golf course (which will be powered by solar energy) will be completed around 2015. The futuristic golf course with an underwater club house will be reachable by boat, diving or submarine and will be completely carbon neutral.

In the meantime there are still over 100 beautiful island resorts to choose from for that unforgettable holiday!
