Fine Art Photographer Steve Giovinco Gives Talk at Rockaway Artists Alliance/MoMAPS1 Rockaway VW Dome
Online, June 7, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Picture photographing on the rugged, breathtaking coast of remote Newfoundland, Canada in moonlight, or in a strangely quiet Beijing Park at dawn-without looking through the camera at all. The results are surprising, stunning, beautiful and unlike any other photographs seen before.
Fine art photographer Steve Giovinco will discuss this unusual photographic technique as well as his new landscape photographs during an artist talk at the MoMA/PS1 Rockaway VW Dome.
Sponsored by the Rockaway Artists Alliance, the artist talk takes place on Monday, June 10, at 7:30pm at 94th Street and Shore Front Parkway, Rockaway, Queens, New York.
Steve Giovinco, who used to photograph extensively in Rockaway while studying for his MFA from Yale University years ago, will give a lecture about his latest fine art photographic landscape series, "Between."
Many of Steve's photographs are taken without looking through the camera's viewfinder and are created at sunset, sunrise or in the middle of the night.
"Working at night is mysterious: I love how the landscape slowly reveals itself from the surrounding dark. Often I don't really know what is being captured, so I just stand next to the camera, intuitively point it and take the picture. Later, I see what I photographed," says Giovinco.
He traveled extensively to many different locations to make this body of work, and include the coast of Newfoundland; Beijing, China; Manitoba, Canada; rural Pennsylvania; upstate New York; and Rome, Italy.
Steve Giovinco exhibits his photographs widely in many museum and art gallery exhibitions in New York, Europe and North America and graduated with a master's degree in photography from one of the top art schools in the county, Yale University.
As part of EXPO 1: New York, MoMA PS1, in partnership with Volkswagen, has constructed a temporary geodesic dome that serves as a center for culture, education, and community in the Rockaways. As a flexible space, the dome provides a venue for lectures and conversations, rotating art exhibitions, film and video screenings, performances, and community events, such for as Steve Giovinco's talk.
The VW Dome 2 is on view from March 29 until June 30. It is located at the southern end of the parking lot located between Beach 94 and Beach 95 Streets, close to the former boardwalk.
Rockaway Artists Alliance is a not-for-profit community arts organization formed in 1994, with a mission to encourage and engage residents of Rockaway, and provide free lectures, exhibits and special events. The talk was organized Sophia Skeans, Treasurer of RAA.
