Do E-Cigarettes Have Carcinogens?

Online, September 27, 2013 (Newswire.com) - With electronic cigarette popularity skyrocketing, a French Consumer magazine 60 Millions Consommateurs (60 Million Consumers), reports that the National Consumer Institute conducted a new study on carcinogens in some electronic cigarettes.

The electronic cigarette is designed to appear like a regular tobacco cigarette, but when a user inhales through the device, air flow is detected by a sensor, which activates a heating element that vaporizes a nicotine solution stored in the mouthpiece. One of the biggest benefits of electronic cigarettes is the fact that there is no tar or carcinogens, since they contain no tobacco.

Researchers have used a new method of testing and found "a significant quantity of carcinogenic molecules" in three out of ten e-cigs. The carcinogen, formaldehyde, had numbers comparing closely to a conventional cigarette. Thomas Laurenceau, the chief editor of the magazine wrote, "The highly toxic molecule acrolein was also detected in the vapors of e-cigarettes, sometimes at levels even higher than in traditional cigarettes."

"This is not a reason to ban them, but to place them under better control," he said.
