Daniel Yelovich From Glen Ellyn Highlights the Importance of National Emergency Medical Services Week

GLEN ELLYN, Ill., May 27, 2018 (Newswire.com) - Established in 1974, then-President Gerald Ford authorized National EMS Week to celebrate emergency medical service practitioners and the vital work they do in the nation's communities.

Especially keen to highlight the importance of the event is Daniel Yelovich, a licensed mortgage loan officer and father of two from Glen Ellyn, Illinois. "I'll be forever thankful for our emergency medical service workers," he says, poignantly.

In December 1979, Yelovich was waiting patiently at a stop light when he was hit by an out-of-control gravel truck attempting to take a right-hand turn at speed. "I could see that he was only on his right set of wheels and was tipping over, with me in his path," he recalls. "The next thing I remember is noise, pain and confusion."

"The truck," Yelovich continues, "had torn back the roof of my car and the roof had pinned me to the passenger seat. Gravel covered me as pedestrians appeared from nowhere to clear the gravel from around my head so that I could breathe."

"They shouted at me to not move," he recalls. Not knowing if the truck might slip and crush him further, he dutifully obeyed.

It was then that the finance professional heard sirens in the distance. "Never was there a more welcome sound," says Yelovich. The EMS workers were quickly at his side, exuding expertise and confidence. "I knew I was in good hands," he remembers, looking back.

Within 20 minutes, Yelovich was pulled gently from his demolished automobile and loaded into a waiting ambulance with a further crew of EMS workers.

"I enthusiastically thanked them at the time, and I still thank God for them every day," says Yelovich of the experience.

To show his continued support for the country's emergency medical service workers, Yelovich is this week highlighting National EMS Week's tips for bringing together local communities and medical personnel to honor the dedication of those who provide the day-to-day lifesaving services of medicine's front line.

"Whether celebrated with a company cookout, catered lunch or an open house to which EMS personnel are invited, National EMS Week is the perfect time to recognize our emergency medical services and all that its practitioners do for our nation," says Daniel Yelovich.

Other suggestions include recognizing an instance where CPR has saved a life, honoring fallen EMS personnel, creating an "EMT or Paramedic of the Year" award or simply saying "thank you."

Yelovich further echoes the last point, wrapping up by adding, "Don't underestimate the power of a simple, heartfelt 'thank you' to our emergency medical service workers this week or indeed any other week of the year. It'll always be appreciated."
