When approached with the idea of starting an open-air public market in West Oakland the owner struggled for a bit before investing full support. The area, one of Oakland's top priorities for re-development has seen the ups and downs of the market. Crime and blight in the neighborhood is high but there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. This Oakland area is on everyone's "to-do" list and most recently initiatives to grow the community are action oriented.

West Oakland has a rich history in commerce and trade. A port neighborhood, heavily populated by African American families that included business owners, railway workers, educators, public employees and the like. After a steep decline, the area is seeing a return of communal innovation and integrity.

The market will host crafters, hobbyists, recyclers and artists as well as weekend warriors. There is planned space for exhibits and showcases as well as presentations. This is definitely a community focused space. It is also a collaborative effort bringing together non-profit organizations and for profit businesses . . all in the name of community development. Recycled and Up cycled fashion, art, jewelry, artisan foods, fresh produce, furniture, household goods, home goods, community resource information, crafts and more . . .

Beautiflea People is a local minority owned small business. This African American business is committed to improving Oakland through community and resource development.
