Mr. Berry outshines others in his field due to his extensive educational background, numerous awards and recognitions and career longevity. With the medical trends going the way they are, people are living longer, so the majority of my clients are concerned with how they are going to pay for the devastating costs of long-term care. For example, there was recently a USA Today article which stated that those diagnosed with dementia today will have a lifetime cost of $730,000. It is my job as an elder law attorney to try to put together game plans for my clients to help them prepare for that costly journey.

Listed as a "Best Lawyer for Elder Law & Estate Planning" by both Best Lawyers in America and DBusiness Magazine, Mr. Berry brings a wealth of knowledge to his industry, and, in particular, to his area of specialization - helping Michigan seniors and their families plan for an uncertain future. When asked why he decided to pursue a career in law, Mr. Berry recalled that a business law class he took during his undergraduate years was the initial inspiration:

"I knocked the class out of the park, so I decided to enroll at Michigan State University College of Law. After spending one summer at the Wayne County prosecutor’s office, I realized that I didn’t want to spend my law career in court. In the end, my background in psychology and finance led me to estate planning. I figured out that estate planning was one of the few areas of law where you're helping good people without fighting or breaking up families."

As a thought leader in his field, Mr. Berry is a frequently sought after as a speaker and writer on a broad range of elder law and estate planning topics, including long-term care planning, veterans' benefits and Medicaid planning. This prominence requires that he stay on top of the latest developments in elder law. In particular, he notes that the aging population is living longer now more than ever, which creates increased costs in long-term care:

"With the medical trends going the way they are, people are living longer, so the majority of my clients are concerned with how they are going to pay for the devastating costs of long-term care. For example, there was recently a USA Today article which stated that those diagnosed with dementia today will have a lifetime cost of $730,000. It is my job as an elder law attorney to try to put together game plans for my clients to help them prepare for that costly journey."

Mr. Berry is also an adjunct professor at WMU Cooley Law School as well as the author of The Caregiver’s Legal Guide to Planning for a Loved One with Chronic Illness. Deeply involved in his professional community and a top fundraiser for the Walk to End Alzheimer's, Mr. Berry has been recognized as an Alzheimer's Champion by the Alzheimer's Association.
