Chinese government claims new book, "Unsavory Characters" hurts the feelings of the Chinese people
The Chinese government has rejected characterizations of Chinese people made in the new book, "Unsavory Characters."

The Chinese Government reportedly objects to characterizations of the Chinese People in the newly published book, "Unsavory Characters: The Rather Eclectic Group that are The English Teachers in China." While the book purports to be about the experience of foreigners living and teaching English in China, the Chinese Government claims its real target is the Chinese People and that it unfairly portrays them.
The book starts out telling the tale of one American and how he ended up teaching English at a university in Beijing, China. It then explores the personalities of many other teachers that he meets in China.
The other narrative explored in the book is the interactions this teacher has with Chinese students, Chinese friends and other Chinese people he encounters during his stay in China.
Prior to release of the book, the author submitted manuscripts to several Chinese friends in China. Apparently, a copy made its way to someone in the foreign ministry who contacted one Chinese friend of the author who received a copy and complained to that friend about some of the representations made in the book.
The author's friend disagreed with the foreign ministry that the book is unfair in its representations of Chinese people, but the employee of the foreign ministry told the friend, "We are all Chinese. We need to be unified regarding this manner."
The author stands by the book as a fair representation of the foreigners teaching in China as well as the Chinese people.
