Cancer Treatment Group Initiates Essay Contest To Support Local Cancer Patients

Fayetteville, AR, June 5, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Highlands Oncology Group (HOG), Northwest Arkansas’ leading cancer treatment group, has commenced a new program, the “Wish Upon A Hog Essay Competition,” to support local cancer patients and their families. 

HOG hopes to provide an outlet for Northwest Arkansas residents to show their support for the brave men and women who battle cancer, with strength and tenacity, everyday. As nearly everyone is affected by cancer, in some capacity, platforms on which to speak out for the courage  of cancer patients, and their families, is essential to providing a community of support. 

The competition invites essayists to submit short essays on the heroes that have battled cancer while being icons for hope and perseverance. The winner of the essay competition wins four box seat tickets to an Arkansas Naturals game for a family, or person, affected by cancer. The essayists will also win two tickets to join the hero for the game.

Entries for the first Wish Upon A Hog Essay Competition were due on May 26 and a winner chosen from Walker Elementary School in Springdale. The students of a class at Walker Elementary wrote essays for their teacher, Cecilia Peer, who has cancer, and one winner was chosen from the class. The winner chosen was Makayla Maston. Peer is undergoing treatment and will retire from teaching this year. All of the students’ essays were compiled into a book which was presented to Peer. Peer’s husband and daughter were in attendance, as well as the principal of the school.

Another student, Dustin Emerson, from Gravette Upper Elementary was chosen to take their father to the game.
