Brighton Designer Featured In London Design Festival Exhibition Expands Into Furniture Alteration
Online, December 2, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Local designer and maker Caroline Saul was approached by 'Mint' in London to revamp a chair which was featured their London Design Festival Exhibition. The Brighton designer was chosen to incorporate her unique recycled plastic into the piece exhibited during the period of 18th-30th September 2010.
It has been estimated that the UK generates nearly 3 million tonnes of plastic waste. Approximately 56% of all plastic waste is a result of packaging and three-quarters of this comes form households. Furthermore, only 7% of this waste is being recycled at present. Caroline Saul's work is inspired by sustainability in using what may otherwise end up as waste.
Working with recycled plastics (mainly plastic milk bottles) Caroline Saul has found a way to use this simple everyday material to create innovative and dynamic pieces. Her work explores sustainability through the quality of plastic, creating shape and form while incorporating the use of colour, texture and patterning.
The Brighton based designer is passionate about recycling materials and objects that might otherwise be discarded to create unique, high quality craft pieces. Her recent participation in the London Design Festival Exhibition demonstrates her ability to turn what seems an ordinary material into something dynamic and exceptional.
Having been approached by 'Mint' Caroline Saul has discovered a new avenue for her work. She has branched out into small furniture alteration, incorporating her recycled plastic into existing furniture pieces, creating distinctive and exceptionally unique designs.
The Brighton designer looks forward to exploring and expanding in this field:
"I am very excited about this new avenue for my work; it will allow me to develop my craft. I am looking forward to using and manipulating my materials in different ways to those I have used before".
As well as sculpture and her new avenue of furniture alteration, Caroline Saul's work includes making lighting pieces and cards. The Brighton designer is now taking commissions for furniture.
Caroline Saul graduated in 2008 following her degree in Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics at the University of Brighton. Since then she has held a number of exhibitions, was featured in the 10th Anniversary of Bilston Craft Gallery Exhibition and became a finalist in Aesthetica Annual Creative Works Competition.
