Big Winners on New Game Show Will Wipe Out Student Loan Debt, Reports Ameritech Financial
ROHNERT PARK, Calif., July 18, 2018 (Newswire.com) - ROHNERT PARK, Calif., July 18, 2018 (Newswire) - Student loan debt is such a pervasive crisis that Americans are dealing with it in increasingly creative ways. In recent news, a game show will help contestants pay down their student loan debt. The show is counting on a wide audience of interested viewers since there are more than 44 million borrowers who owe more than $1.5 trillion in student loan debt. The show hopes to award more than 60 contestants about $500,000 in its first 16 episodes. Though it may not be a solution for the overall student loan crisis, it may provide some relief from the seriousness of the challenge, especially for those who are winners. Ameritech Financial, a document preparation company that assists borrowers in applying for federal programs, such as income-driven repayment plans (IDRs), understands very few borrowers can erase their student loan debt by winning a television game show. For many borrowers struggling with student loan debt, IDRs can possibly lower payments and might even end in forgiveness after 20 or 25 years.
“A game show centered on repaying student loan debt means this problem has become completely part of the public consciousness,” said Tom Knickerbocker, Executive Vice President of Ameritech Financial. “We work with borrowers every day and understand their real challenges and victories, and we feel especially proud of not only how much money our clients have saved when they enroll in IDRS, but how much financial and emotional suffering has been eased.”

The premise is simple. All contestants carry student loan debt and will answer questions in three rounds of play: general knowledge/college major, polls/surveys, and academic. The last player standing has the chance to wipe out all of his or her student debt. Before the game show even aired, there was a flurry of opinions in the press. While most simply found the premise clever, others, such as Jezebel, wondered about the appropriateness of using something as serious as the student loan debt crisis in this very non-serious game show motif.
Despite opinions, the show takes the air with a built-in possible viewership of millions of sympathetic audience members, many of whom are enthusiastic to see anyone relieved of their student loan debt stress.
“So many borrowers know the challenge of dealing with student loan debt, and this game show is another indication of how extensive the problem is,” said Knickerbocker. “We wish the contestants success. But, more importantly, we want to be sure that anyone struggling with student loan debt gets all of the relief possible. We can help borrowers navigate what many see as a difficult process of applying for and maintaining enrollment in IDRs, which allow them to ‘win,’ not a TV game show, but by maximizing the financial relief available to them.”
