Big-spending Indians lead the way!

India's travellers spent more on hotels than Brits, Germans and French - reveals a Hotels.com survey

No longer can people say: "Indians are stingy!" Travelers from our country today have broken this myth and are ranked as the world's 7th biggest spenders on hotels while traveling abroad. Lavish spending considered to be a western habit, is now adopted by Indians as well who have in the past been known for their prudence. Today the tables are turning with Indians no longer suppressing their desires but eagerly fulfilling their needs and wants by exploring the world.

According to the Hotels Price Index by Hotels.com, the world's leading hotel booking website, Indian travelers are ahead of citizens from countries such as UK, Italy, France, Germany in terms of hotel spending. On average, Indians spent Rs.6, 816 while travelling overseas, compared to Brits who spent Rs 6,604 while the French paid out Rs. 6,086 and Germans Rs. 5,980 for a hotel room per night (Q2 2010).

Mr. Abhiram Chowdhry, Marketing Director, Asia Pacific for Hotels.com, says," Indians, who frequently travel abroad, are eager to learn more through international travel and believe in paying the right price for a great experience. Also, strong economic growth over the past decade has resulted in many Indians having good income at their disposal which allows them to spend more than the travelling citizens of many other countries."
India was one of the few economies to emerge unfazed by the global downturn - according to Indian government, the economy grew 8.8% year-on-year in April through June Hence the growing economy along with rising disposable incomes has resulted in increase in expenditure by Indian traveler's vis-a-vis other major nationalities.
Topping the list are the U.S. travellers who were the biggest spenders when they travelled abroad according to the Hotels.com Hotel Price Index, spending Rs.7, 338 on average when travelling overseas.
