Best Cataracts Surgery at Ebsaar Eye Clinic

Contact lenses are a better option for infants on the long run as opposed to implant lenses, which are the best solution for adults who have had cataract surgery.

For many patients, young and old, adults or children who have Cataract Surgery in Dubai, using an artificial lens is the best option. However, clinical testing suggests that for infants and children, the best option is to perform surgery, and thereafter use contact lenses and eventually the implantation of a lens, explains Dr. Hani Sakla, a third generation ophthalmologist and founder of the Ebsaar Eye Surgery Center, a full fledged Eye Clinic in Dubai specializing in Lasik and Cataract surgeries.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, and it can be removed and replaced with an artificial lens in a very quick and easy procedure. The artificial lens is called an intraocular lens (IOL). This option is available for infants as well, but the use of contact lens is much safer,  but not as effective as an IOL.

“We feel that contact lenses are the best options as opposed to IOLs, until the child get's older. However, IOLs do have certain advantages in an infant as it corrects vision constantly, while contact lenses may get dislodged from the eye." said Dr Sakla.

Most often cataract is thought to be an eye condition that results from aging, however young children and infants are often  diagnosed with congenital cataracts, which is present at birth. The condition can affect both eyes.

In Dubai, most children and infants with Cataracts in Dubai will eventually need an IOL, but the timing varies for each patient, Dr. Sakla said. “I’ve had patients who, as young as 5 or 6 years old have IOLs, while others had to wait until they went off to University, ” he said.

Research suggests that using an IOL on an infant can improve their long term vision and spare the stress and additional work a parent may have to do such as changing contact lenses and the discomfort the infant may have as well as the introduction of germs to the eye. Using IOLs from infancy has its disadvantages as well. For instance, the Eye Surgeon may not be very sure about the focusing power of the artificial lens for infants. Also, IOL implants are usually safe and complication-free for adults but may cause post-operative problems for infants. However, cataract surgery and the use of artificial lens in infants as well as adults have become more advanced, sophisticated and is widely used, making it a more feasible option.

“We think that for most infants who suffer from cataract, using contact lenses is a better solution as opposed to IOL,” Dr. Sakla said. “However, there are cases where a patient may not be a suitable candidate to receive a contact lens."

Apart from the possible discomfort and a parent's anxiety, there could be less evident challenges to an infant wearing contact lenses. Sometimes, cataracts in infants are hereditary, and both parent and child can have cataracts, making it very difficult for the parent  to look after an infant who has to wear contact lenses. "These are all human problems and difficulties that parents and children face" says Dr Sakla. While affordability can be a cause for concern for some parents, although certain health insurance plans do cover the costs for IOL but do not pay for contact lenses.
