Ashton Whiteley - UK Lawmakers Criticize May's Brexit Strategy
SHANGHAI, May 2, 2018 (Newswire.com) - Ashton Whiteley analysts say British Prime Minister, Theresa May is facing growing pressure over her Brexit plan after she rejected the possibility of pursuing a customs union with the European Union.
A large number of anti-EU officials did not participate in a recent parliamentary debate where the government was called upon to continue negotiating a workable customs union with the European Union after the Prime Minister announced that she would not review her position on the matter.
Ashton Whiteley analysts say the absence of these officials means that May is a long way from winning the battle over Brexit and that she could well be overruled in parliament at a later stage.
The motion on a customs union was verbally approved by the House of Commons. The process did not require a vote and further government action was not necessary.
Ashton Whiteley analysts say a customs union is one of the biggest points of contention in the negotiations over Britain’s looming departure from the European Union and hardline Brexiteers do not take kindly to any proposal that the UK may maintain any such an association with the European Union.
A member of the opposition Labour Party stated that reaching an agreement on a customs union was a possibility, adding that there were sufficient lawmakers to rule against the government in parliament later in the year.
She was supported by a number of Conservative lawmakers, who have held the belief that May’s call for the UK to leave the European Union’s single market and customs union could damage and isolate Britain’s economy.
