On November 12, 2010 Greater Salem City of God Church was sold at foreclosure auction to a credit union who was left to take a loss on a loan gone default. The Preacher Bureau of Investigation has just released a review of what happened to the Greater Salem Congregation in a report available on their website PimpPreacher.com.
How Could This Happen?
Examples like Pastor Jinwright are only symptoms of a greater illness which happens to be the Prosperity Gospel. The Doctrine of Prosperity places an enormous emphasis on blessing your pastor in order to receive a blessing from God.
The prosperity gospel requires that members pay the church first even before paying their own bills. It also numbs the commonsense of the members and convinces them that it's perfectly ok for the pastor to receive all of his wealth from donations made to the church.
Pastors who preach the prosperity gospel are often the CEO of the non-profit status 501 (c) (3) of the church, which means that they have the final say on all financial decisions.
Under the doctrine of prosperity, trustee boards are diluted, and the bank account of the church falls under the full control of the pastor.
The Solution
The very unfortunate events that surround Greater Salem is still very painful to watch especially since it could have been avoided with as little as two teaspoons of fiscal accountability.
The lesson from this horrific situation is very clear and simple to implement. Even if someone is in authority they have to also to remain under authority. Failing to implement a system of checks and balances could result in a congregation having to conduct weekly services in the parking lot of the local Wal-Mart.
