Amy's Army, a Part of the Amy Van Dyken Foundation, Selects First Medical Equipment Recipient

Amy’s Army today announced the selection of the first donation recipient less than three months after the launch of the foundation.

Taylor Stuart, a 20 year-old student from Donalsonville, GA, was selected to receive a Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bicycle, which will maintain the muscles in her legs and build additional muscle.  The FES Bicycle will also serve a cardio opportunity, allow her muscle mass to maintain bone density, and prevent osteoporosis and sores that can cause a paraplegic other major health problems.

I am proud and happy that the AVD Foundation has been able to get Taylor this much needed piece of equipment after being in existence for only three months.

Amy Van Dyken-Rouen, Founder

“I was an avid athlete in sports like track, basketball, and running,” said Taylor.  “I miss those legs and the competition.” Taylor was an passionate runner and all-region basketball player, coming off of a season high of 234 points in her junior year of high school.

Taylor, a T10 paraplegic, is currently a full-time student pursuing a degree in nursing and minoring in nutrition at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, GA.  She graduated from Southwest Georgia Academy as an honor graduate despite the auto accident that left her paralyzed eight days into her senior year.

"I am proud and happy that the AVD Foundation has been able to get Taylor this much needed piece of equipment after being in existence for only three months, “ said Amy Van Dyken-Rouen. “This is thanks to our many donors who help us purchase this expensive equipment, and to the volunteers who make up Amy's Army. We are so pleased that Taylor is our first recipient.”

“I am so thankful and blessed to have been chosen to receive the FES Bike through the Amy VanDyken Foundation,” said Taylor. “In the long run, my life and body will be so much more enhanced by the having and using this bike.”
