Afrofuturefest Debuts at New York Comic Con 2015

For the first time in New York Comic Con history, 11 African-American comic book artists, animators, graphic designers and sequential fiction writers will share a booth on the Main Floor of the Javitz Center in New York to showcase their talents.

Afrofuturefest will make its premiere at  New York Comic Con next week at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center from Thursday October 8th – Sunday October 11th.

Tim Fielder of Dieselfunk Studios (Matty's Rocket), organizer and creator of Afrofuturefest, says the unprecedented event is meant to show the public that there are plenty of African American and indie artists doing quality work in the comic book, art, gaming, film and animation industries.

"Afrofuturefest was created to celebrate all of those comic book artists, writers, game designers, and filmmakers of color who love fantasy, sci-fi, horror, superheroes and pop-culture. Afrofuturefest is American Culture."

Tim, Fielder

Convention attendees will be able to find Afrofuturefest on the main floor at Booth #24444 right next to Joe Koch of Koch Comics, a longtime friend of Fielder's and one of the sponsors of the event. Never before has this many artists of color of this caliber will been showcased together at NYCC. Some of the artists participating will be Erika Alexander and Tony Puryear, creators of the graphic novel Concrete Park (Dark Horse Comics), Afua Richardson artist on Captain Marvel (Marvel) and the Genius comic book series by TopCow and BOUNCE! webcomic creator Chuck Collins (RatRonin).

Afrofuturefest will be "ground zero" for the artists' largest fan-base of black nerds or "blerds". Participants will be selling copies of their work, creating original pieces, participating in panel discussions, screening films, signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. For those who can't make it to the NYCC, artists will be conducting on camera interviews for social media. This event is not to be missed!
