Accommodation in London for the 2012 Olympic Games

a review of the different types of accommodation avaliable in London during the 2012 Games.

London has recently been voted the most expensive European city to visit by other European travelers. However, this poll will not put off the millions of tourists who will descend upon London next summer in time for the Olympic Games. If you are lucky enough to have secured a ticket, your thoughts may now be turning to where you might stay during the Games. London offers a huge variety of accommodation, from upmarket hotels like The Ritz to reasonably priced camp sites; there is something for every budget, despite London's pricey reputation.

Hotels
London offers a dazzling array of hotels, from budget options like Travelodge where family rooms start at £19, to luxury institutions such as The Ritz where a room can cost thousands of pounds per night. If you want a little taste of luxury but can't afford to splash out on a room, why not try Afternoon Tea at the Ritz? An institution in itself, Afternoon Tea starts at £40 per person and will need to be booked well in advance.

Camping
It may surprise you to learn that there are five camping sites within the M25. Many sites now offer modern amenities such as showers, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and electricity hook-ups for caravans. A pitch for a tent in the height of summer will often start at the very reasonable sum of £10 per night. This is undoubtedly one of the most affordable forms of accommodation for a family visiting London.

Hostels
Once the exclusive domain of backpacking twenty-somethings, hostels are quickly becoming the accommodation of choice for tourists on a budget. In a London hostel, a night in a mixed dorm can cost as little as £6 per person. If the idea of sharing with a group of 8 strangers isn't for you, many hostels now offer private rooms for 2 - 4 people, although you have to pay a little more for the luxury of privacy.

Vacation Rentals
The benefit of a vacation rental is that each property is privately owned and self contained; it offers you the freedom to do what you like when you like, and will often reflect the culture of the city you are staying in more than an identikit room from a hotel chain would. They aren't the cheapest form of accommodation in the capital but do offer you a degree of freedom that is not available from a hotel room.

Self Catering
Many people find self-catering accommodation preferable to hotels because it offers flexibility in terms of dining arrangements. Unlike when staying in a hotel, you are free to cook you own food rather than eating out in restaurants, which can help to minimize costs if you are traveling on a budget.
