A Nod to Nordic: Aava Brings Small Serving Bowl to Kitchenware Line

Scandinavian-inspired home goods manufacturer Aava announced this week the release of their second Nordic serving bowl. The bowl is available for purchase for $189.

The new bowl is a companion piece to Aava’s Large Nordic Serving Bowl. When paired together, the two pieces can perform a variety of tasks required by a dinner party for 12 or just a night at home with a loved one or friend.

“You can … serve cold sides in the Nordic Serving Bowl and keep them chilled at the table,” the item’s product description reads on the Aava website. “Whether you serve hot or cold sides, sauces, creams or gravies in (this) bowl, your table will be both appealing and refined.”

"The wooden handle and know on the lid pair perfectly with the functional design of the bowl and lid to create a piece that leans toward the Nordic tradition of minimalism."

Visually speaking, the small serving bowl is an avatar of Nordic design. There are no flashy colors or gaudy lines; just simple, sensible form and material that exude understated luxury.

The bowl features a wooden handle with a natural finish and a disarming pale color. A knob of matching wood is fixed to the lid of the bowl, making it easy to remove the top without the danger of spills or burns.

A ceramic body ensures that cold contents stay cold and warm contents stay warm.

There is a keen attention to function in this piece, a critical aspect of Scandinavian tradition of design that dates back to the 1950’s.

“Straight lines are unencumbered by adornment and reflect the clean look and appeal of wood and ceramic,” the bowl’s description reads. “The wooden handle and know on the lid pair perfectly with the functional design of the bowl and lid to create a piece that leans toward the Nordic tradition of minimalism.”

That Aava has announced the release of another piece of kitchenware is no surprise, as the company has made nine such announcements over the past week. The new line products, many of which have multiple functions as serving dishes, all reflect the simplicity and usability inherent in Aava’s design philosophy.

The merging of wood and ceramic, as is the case in the small Nordic Serving Bowl, is a nod to the nature-focused perspectives of Scandinavian designers.

“Minimalist expression is inspired by the natural world to create items that are both highly functional and opulent,” the company’s About Us page reads. “All of Aava’s products follow the artistic expression of Scandinavian design principles, which center on using the natural resource available to create simple, entrancing products.”

All of Aava’s new kitchenware releases can be viewed in the Serving Sets section of the company’s retail website, www.aavanordic.com. Items within this collection range in price from $89 to $329. Each item within this new line that features wood (all but two items) include the Aava logo laser-etched into their handle or lid.
