One of a Kind Comic Art Painting Exclusively for Sale on Sketch Maven for a Limited Time
A six foot tall original painting of the comic characters from Moon Mullins will be sold on Sketch Maven to the highest bidder on September 30. The framed painting is by Ferd Johnson, who spent nearly 70 years working on the Moon Mullins comic.
Online, September 23, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Comic collectors and art aficionados have the opportunity to acquire a unique piece of cartoon art history. This week, Sketch Maven is offering a tremendous piece of cartoon artwork featuring the characters of Moon Mullins, one of the longest running comic strips in American history.
"This is beautiful artwork by Ferd and Tom Johnson, measuring over six feet tall and nearly four feet wide. I haven't seen anything like it before," comments Mike Todasco, founder of Sketch Maven, the World's Greatest Original Comic Art Marketplace. "We are fortunate to have this artwork exclusively on our site, and we are offering it to the public for the first time."
The artwork is being sold via Sketch Maven's "Make Me an Offer" process. "With the make me an offer process, collectors can make an offer for the Moon Mullins painting via our website. Think of it as a closed envelope auction where on September 30, the highest offer will receive the framed piece," adds Todasco.
Moon Mullins was created by Frank Willard in 1923. It was a working class comic strip featuring a prize fighter as the title character and a broad cast of characters including Moon Mullins kid brother, Kayo. Ferd Johnson dropped out of school at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts to work on the comic strip as an assistant a few months after it began. He continued until the final Moon Mullins feature on June 2, 1991; his 68 years on the comic strip is the longest run in history by a comic artist. During that time, Moon Mullins was adapted for television and radio and appeared on everything from board games to perfume bottles. Moon's little brother, Kayo, even had his own soft drink: Kayo Chocolate Drink.
The oversized artwork is a beautiful piece that was done by Ferd Johnson with assistance from his son, Tom Johnson, who also began working on the comic strip in 1978. It was acquired by a close friend of Ferd's in Newport Beach, CA sometime after he left the strip in 1991 and before his death in 1996. It is now available to the public for sale for the first time.
