Online, July 17, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Others may be experiencing pain, bleeding or want to know if all is well.
The first routine ultrasound scan performed on the NHS is usually around 11 weeks. Many women want the visual reassurance that all is well. Waiting up to 11 weeks to see their baby is a long time. A private early pregnancy scan is sometimes the only option. It is important to know that when booking an appointment with a Private Medical Ultrasound Centre that it also has full medical back up facilities and medical reporting.
Expectant mum's when worried usually call their GP/Midwife or early pregnancy unit as first port of call in the hope that a scan will be offered. If symptoms are so concerning and the early pregnancy unit is over booked or closed, an attendance at A & E is the only option and even then a scan may not be offered. Many worried couples are unaware that a private scan can be usually available within 24 hours.
Emma Ferriman, Consultant Obstetrician and Feto-Maternal Medicine Specialist "I have seen many couples scanned in rented offices or hotel rooms where an abnormality has been seen, and they are left to fend for themselves and then find it difficult to access the appropriate medical care."

The pregnancy scan provides a wealth of reassuring information, checking the pregnancy is within the uterus to rule out a possible ectopic pregnancy and from as early as 6 to 7 weeks the baby's heartbeat if all is well. By measuring the baby's head (crown) to bottom (rump) length (CRL) gestational age can be established. The dating scan can also identify multiple / twin pregnancies.
