World's First "Cultured Beef Burger Served" Veggie Burger

That burger, to the left? That's not a veggie burger.

But it’s not really a beef burger, either. It’s a CULTURED beef burger, cooked up for the first time Monday in a London press event. (http://culturedbeef.net/event/).

Here’s the description of how the burger comes to be, from the website of its creators at Maastricht University:

“Cultured Beef is created by painlessly harvesting muscle cells from a living cow. Scientists then feed and nurture the cells so they multiply to create muscle tissue, which is the main component of the meat we eat. It is biologically exactly the same as the meat tissue that comes from a cow.”

So, no cows are harmed to make this meat and this kind of meat means less livestock eventually living on Earth creating greenhouse gas emissions and in need of pastureland.

But the meat is still, um, meat. It’s unlikely a product like this will be widely available for 10-20 years, according to the Maastricht FAQ on cultured beef.
