Windows Server 2008 Now Comes With New Security Features Such As Bitlocker And Aslr
Online, December 19, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Robert Nelson, Managing Director of windows-server-2008 declaring that windows server 2008 now comes with advanced security options that make it a more secured and efficiently workable server operating system till date. He also mentioned that the rich applications that are stuffed in the windows server 2008 will make it easier for an administrator to develop, deliver and maintain services to the highest possible level of quality. Windows server 2008 is built with the same code as that of vista and therefore most of the functionalities infrastructure is similar in both of them but the newer version has a lot more features that make it more preferable than vista. To make a windows system secured and safe, lots of factors play an important role which includes the use of many tools and applications such as Bit locker and Address space layout randomization (ASLR).
Bit locker is an encryption system that is used in window servers 2008 to protect your data from unwanted interference. It uses Advanced Encryption Algorithm (AES) for the encryption of electronic data. To improve disk encryption, Bit locker uses AES in Cipher-block Chaining (CBC) mode with a 128 bit key that is combined with the Elephant Diffuser.
A Bit locker drive inspection has three modes to implement the encryption system. The first two modes that is, "Transparent operation mode" and "User authentication mode" utilizes TPM (trusted Platform Module) hardware to detect any changes to the pre-booted windows server 2008 environment, including the BIOS (Basic Input/output System) and MBR (Master Boot Record). If the Bit locker identifies any unauthorized change, it requests for a recovery key on a USB device and decrypts the Volume Master Key (VMK) which allows the boot-up process to continue.
Speaking of the other security feature ASLR, it is a computer security system which includes arranging the positions of key data areas arbitrarily in a processor's address space. In window servers 2008, ASLR characterizes in disguising the attacker by randomly storing the file and increasing the search space thus making it difficult for an attacker to locate a specific file. Unless the attacker knows the exact location of the file, it will be just impossible for the attacker to find the file of his need.
Entropy is another option that makes ASLR more effective. Entropy means lack of order or predictability. Entropy can be caused by increasing the virtual memory area space over which the randomization occurs or by reducing the period where the randomization happens. Thus any way or the other, an attacker will be unable to reach his destination files.
More security options are also available like firewalls that further contribute in providing the required level of security. But, the above options make it unable for a user to access any particular file, if it doesn't belong to him or his department. Only an authorized access will be permitted by the system. Windows server 2008 ensembles all the security systems together and creates a type of 'virtual wall' which is impossible to be crossed by an infiltrator.
