Wimmer Continues To Show Strong
Online, March 30, 2011 (Newswire.com) - Scott Wimmer and the #40 Key Motorsports team went into Fontana with certain goals in mind, get better on their pit stops to ensure track position and better engine reliability. With only one practice session on Friday before qualifying and the race on Saturday, their weekend got off to an ominous start with an engine failure on lap one of the practice session. With no back-up car this weekend the team quickly began work on putting a new engine in the car to have it ready for qualifying for the Royal Purple 300 at Auto Club Speedway.
Wimmer would qualify the #40 Chevy Impala in 24th starting position, and at the drop of the green flag would immediately start picking up spots on the field. Before long he would find himself in the Top-20, and running consistently fast laps. Opting to stay out of the pits under the first caution would prove to be a good move for the #40 Key Motorsports team as the team would restart in the Top-15. Wimmer would consistently run between 15th and 20th place until the fuel pump gave way two thirds into the race which would put the Chevy Impala into the garages for a lengthy repair. Under the new NASCAR points system every point matters as the season wears on, and thus Wimmer was able to rejoin the fray some 33 laps down to gain two more positions, and two more valuable points.
"Fontana showed that this team has momentum and is getting stronger and better in each race," said Scott Wimmer. "We are looking for the right sponsor to step up that can make us even stronger as the season progresses."
After the first five rounds of the 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series, Wimmer sits 22nd in the Driver Championship. Team Owner Curtis Key sits in 31st position needing just one point to get back into the coveted Top-30 that automatically locks the team into each race. The team has a week off this week before heading to Texas on April 8th, and is looking strongly at working on its engine reliability and the all too necessary sponsorship that the team needs to put the program in place for a strong push towards the championship the balance of the season.
