The International Organization of African Nurses is conducting a public symposium this Sunday, April 1, at Hampton Inn & Suites between 4:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. The symposium will be addressed by a number of experts, including Dr. Jean Banae, Dr. Jakki Opollo, and Dr. Ekokobe Fonkem. The theme of the IOAN symposium will revolve around Healthcare in Africa and how impacting it can enhance global health. Many experts from different occupations will come together to express their views and share the knowledge.

When asked about the event, Dr. Elvis Ngyia, president of the IOAN said, “The core idea behind the conception of the IOAN was to create a platform which would advocate for improvements in nursing and healthcare standards in Africa. We believe that medical professionals of African descent are better equipped to raise awareness, develop and subsequently implement solutions to resolve healthcare issues in Africa. This inaugural symposium offers a unique opportunity for people to come together and listen to experts share their knowledge and ask questions they might have.”

Increased globalization and international migration have made healthcare in Africa an increasingly more relevant component of global health. Through our endeavors, we not only seek to raise awareness and urgency regarding the threats posed by weak healthcare systems in Africa but also formulate solutions to deal with them. This public symposium is a continuation of our efforts to talk about these challenges and show how the International organization of African Nurses is intervening through projects, system support and training.

Dr. Elvis Ngyia, President, IOAN

Further stating the motives and aim of the organization, Dr. Elvis Ngyia said, “Increased globalization and international migration has made healthcare in Africa an increasingly more relevant component of global health. Through our endeavors, we not only seek to raise awareness and urgency regarding the threats posed by weak healthcare systems in Africa but also formulate solutions to deal with them. This public symposium is a continuation of our efforts to talk about these challenges and create awareness regarding important healthcare issues in Africa in the context of global healthcare. For instance, the recent outbreak of diseases like Zika Virus or Ebola goes to show how poor healthcare in Africa can affect global health. This is what we are going to discuss, how improving nursing and medical care standards in Africa would have a positive impact on global health.”

Dr. Elvis hopes that this event would help in bringing together medical and non-medical professionals who are interested in improving healthcare in Africa and global health in the long-term. “I strongly urge anyone who is interested in healthcare to attend our inaugural symposium. The event is free to attend, but as we have limited seats, you must register yourself as soon as you can. We are looking to welcome all attendees and listen to what our expert speakers have to say,” he concluded.
