Adversely, 78.2 million dogs are kept as pets in America. Given these statistics, it's not hard hard to see why cats are such a popular topic online.

For many cat owners, the internet gives them a place to convene. Dog owners have an easier time meeting and socializing at parks or other areas designed for their social furbabies. Cat owners aren't likely to gather at social cat gatherings, so the web gives them a convenient place to connect and exchange candid cat moments.

Cats are easy canvases for human expression. Cat enthusiasts can quietly observe their four-legged friends and make up stories for them along the way. Add a camera, and you've got the perfect storm for some cats engaging in some highly entertaining activities. Cats have played a major role in shaping modern internet culture with nothing more than a keyboard, some boxes, napping or chasing dogs on a robot vacuum cleaner.

But maybe we're over analyzing the issue, maybe the secret to cat popularity is as simple as they're just ridiculously cute. Opening up a video in the middle of a long exhausting work day and finding an adorable video of a kittens playing is a great way to melt your heart and give you a little reprieve from an otherwise hectic day.

So maybe the truth behind the the humble feline's internet stardom can't be boiled down to a science, but that's not going to stop anyone from creating and sharing cat content...and it's definitely not going to stop anyone from viewing it.
