Washburn University Celebrates With One of a Kind 3-Dimensional Art to Highlight 150th Anniversary Celebration

Artist Lawrence Romorini designs a remarkable artwork to reflect the heritage, diversity and achievements of Washburn University over the past 150 years.

Washburn University, a public institution with broadly-based liberal arts and professional programs, celebrated their 150th anniversary by unveiling One Of A Kind 3-dimensional commemorative art created by Lawrence Romorini. The art will be a permanent installation in Washburn’s new Welcome Center at Morgan Hall.

The artwork chronicles Washburn’s history, milestones, traditions, accomplishments and people, as well as the inclusive nature of Washburn since the outset and its continued resilience through challenging times to thrive.

The dynamic structure, measuring 89” x 44” x 5.5,” is created with a blue lacquer base and silver and brass accents. It features over 150 miniaturized photos, publications and actual 3D items. The retrospective begins with a map of the Kansas territory and the founders of Lincoln College and follows the evolution through Washburn College, Washburn Municipal University and Washburn University, ending with the sesquicentennial celebration. Stars engraved with quotes throughout the art highlight milestones. Photoengraved on the outer structure are the Articles of Association and the University motto “Non Nobis Solum.”

“The amazing spirit of Washburn University was really an inspiration,” said Romorini. “I wanted to reflect the energy that has enabled Washburn to succeed over 150 years, empowering their students as they go out into the world. The Ichabod logo is iconic and unique—it was essential to incorporate in the overall design.”

Lawrence Romorini and his One Of A Kind Art Studio transform everyday objects—photographs, publications, 3D items and mementos—into personalized works of art that commemorate history, leadership and accomplishments. Washburn University joins an extraordinary group of organizations whose stories have been showcased in One Of A Kind Artwork over the past 30 years. They include Johns Hopkins, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Marriott, Michael Jordan, Loyola Marymount University, Ernst & Young, Oprah Winfrey, General Electric and USA Today with many others featured on oneofakindinc.com.
