Wall Development Group announced today that its innovative mixed-use project in Northeast Washington, DC has been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Platinum is the highest certification available for a project based on the environmental and energy efficiency considerations of LEED, the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings.

“The work of innovative building projects such as 1115 H Street NE is a fundamental driving force in transforming the way buildings are built, designed and operated,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, President and CEO, USGBC. “Buildings that achieve LEED certification are lowering carbon emissions, creating a healthier environment and reducing operating costs while prioritizing sustainable practices.”

Wall Development Group’s new construction at 1115 H Street achieved LEED platinum certification by implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

The project includes residential and retail space located in the booming H Street NE corridor of Washington, DC, where more than 1,500 units of new housing have been delivered or in the pipeline for completion in the next few years.

“In such a prospering area, it is easy to merely push for a building that yields maximum financial return, but 1115 H Street instead pursued a path achieving the triple bottom line of social, environmental, and financial returns,” said Wall Development’s Stan Wall.

In additional to achieving LEED platinum certification, 25 percent of the residential units in the project were set aside as affordable units and the project achieved significant participation by local and small businesses.

Stan Wall noted, “Achieving LEED Platinum was truly a team effort between Wall Development and key project stakeholders, most critically the design and construction team.”

1115 H Street was designed by Square 134 Architects and constructed by Hamel Builders of Washington. Both of those partners were involved from the initial conceptual design stage, bringing their substantial expertise in sustainable design and construction. Other critical team members were LEED consultant Steven Winter Associates, the DC Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, and construction lender Eagle Bank.
