Viral Campaign Founders for Juneteenth National Holiday Movement Return to Host Bay Area Celebration of Freedom
OAKLAND, Calif., June 13, 2024 (Newswire.com) - Hella Creative and the Last Supper Society, in partnership with the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA), Visit Oakland, Maker's Mark, and ButcherBox, proudly present Hella Juneteenth "The Cookout" on Wednesday, June 19, in the picturesque OMCA Garden.
In 2020, Hella Creative initiated a groundbreaking campaign instrumental in elevating Juneteenth to a nationally recognized holiday. By launching an informative website and advocating for corporate recognition, the collective garnered support from over 805 companies, committing to observe Juneteenth as a paid employee holiday. This year's Hella Juneteenth celebration at the OMCA Garden marks this significant moment in history and commemorates the cultural significance of cookouts within the Black American experience, serving as pillars of community, cuisine, and celebration.
"The Cookout" will feature some of the Bay Area's favorite Black chefs and Black-owned restaurants collaborating on a special Cookout Plate. This curated plate, overseen by Last Supper Society and Town Fare, will showcase classic dishes and backyard favorites from Michele McQueen of Town Fare, Byron Hughes of Last Supper Society, Sobre Mesa, and Smokin' Woods, among others.
Hella Juneteenth promises a day filled with backyard fun and excitement for the entire family. Attendees can also groove to music spun by an all-star lineup of DJs, including Fat Tony, DJ Kenzo, and DJ Darling Cool, playing cookout classics that will make you electric slide and two-step. Along with culinary delights and music, guests can engage in a spades tournament organized by UPLFTRS, a collective line dance led by choreographer Yeni Lucero, wine tasting curated by Black Vines, a unique art installation by Creative Shields, and lawn games scattered throughout OMCA's picturesque garden. There will be something for everyone to enjoy!
