UNA Austin to Host 75th United Nations Anniversary Celebration
AUSTIN, Texas, October 22, 2020 (Newswire.com) - The Austin chapter of the United Nations Association will host the 75th annual United Nations Day celebration on Oct. 22, 2020. This year's event will be hosted virtually in adherence of City of Austin's ordinance. In line with its history, UNA-Austin extends the invitation to the Greater Austin and San Antonio communities.
United Nations Day is a celebration of both the formation of the United Nations on October 24 and its charter. The worldwide celebrations mark the adoption of the UN charter, which took place on Oct. 24, 1945.
The UNA Austin celebration for 2020 follows the national celebration theme of 'Past, Present Progress'. The evening will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a musical performance by Classical Music for the World. Shortly after the performance, attendees will hear from UNA Austin President Aditi Joshi and keynote speaker Farah Eck, Senior Director of the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA). This will be followed by an insight from Team Brownsville's Ann Finch, a community volunteer, based in Austin who has worked tirelessly to support refugees at the border of Matamoros, Mexico and Brownsville, Texas.
The evening will conclude with an awards ceremony honoring Ann Finch as the recipient of the 2020 Inspire Humanitarian Award. "The 75th year celebration of the United Nations is a historic day for our chapter. Early in 2020, we began planning for a large event with the intention of bringing the entire Austin community together. However, due to the external environment, we chose to host an event that would welcome our diverse and growing community and reach out to groups previously unfamiliar with the advocacy and educational efforts of UNA Austin," said Aditi Joshi, President of the Austin Chapter of United Nations Association.
UNA-Austin annually presents the Inspire Humanitarian to individuals whose work supports the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.
Event registration is required by visiting the UNA Austin website.
