UC Irvine Extensions Offers New Webinar On The Transforming Role of Technology in The Classroom
Free Webinar Examines Conventional and Progressive Views on Technology's Place in Learning Environments
Online, October 13, 2011 (Newswire.com) - In response to the growing prominence of digital media in the classroom, The University of California, Irvine Extension announces a free online webinar titled, "How and Why to Transform Schools in Digital Media." Guest speaker, Dr. Mark Warschauer, a professor of education and informatics at the University of California, Irvine, will discuss the appropriateness of technology in the classroom and how it can be utilized for positive changes in teaching and in a class curriculum. The webinar is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. PST.

"With Dr. Warschauer's extensive research and experience using technology in the classroom, the webinar will provide a thorough approach to the topic of using advanced technology in the classroom."
The webinar will address the advantages of using technology in educational institutions, as well as the pitfalls of over-relying on it. Taking in account the opinions of both the techno-pessimists and techno-utopians, participants will take a practical look into the kinds of curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, infrastructure and learning environments that are necessary to allow positive changes to occur. With research refined for teachers, administrators, policymakers, scholars and the interested public, the webinar will examine and upend conventional wisdom about concepts such as tackling a "digital divide" and teachers becoming a "guide on the side."
Recognized as a leading expert in the education field, Dr. Warschauer specializes in information and communication technologies in schools, its impact on language and linguistics practices, and its relationship to institutional reform, democracy and social development. He has published several books on the progress of new electronic literacy among culturally diverse students and the role of information and communication technologies in second language learning and teaching.
