UBIMET, the leading private global weather service provider, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) last week. The two organisations have entered into a public-private partnership to create a sustainable programme for the continued growth of the agency.

“We at NIMET believe that in order to move forward as a meteorological agency we have to embark on modernizing our infrastructure. We will improve what we have and provide what we don’t have. For us to be able to do that, it means we have to identify strategic partners who are interested in supporting similar endeavours, i.e. helping agencies to modernize so they can acquire the necessary equipment. Cooperating with UBIMET is a very golden opportunity for us to realise our ambitions. UBIMET is a very good and strategic partner for us that will help us to modernise our infrastructure. For this reason, we are so enthusiastic about the proposal by UBIMET to partner with NIMET. With this MoU signed, once it is fully operational, the gap in our meteorological infrastructure will definitely be filled,” stated Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi, Director General of NIMET.

By collaborating with NIMET, we would like to support building enhanced sustainable meteorological capacity with our global expertise as well as customised weather models and analysis systems. With the assistance of NIMET, we will roll out a pilot lightning detection network (LDN) across Nigeria to improve meteorological infrastructure and information across the country.

In May 2017, UBIMET showcased its solution for the commercialisation of weather services in Nigeria. In cooperation, NIMET and UBIMET have identified key areas in which commercial solutions can be developed in Africa, allowing meteorological agencies to quickly and effectively engage with industry. The ultimate objective consists in expanding meteorological capability, jointly market meteorological products & services to different industries, such as agriculture, mining and aviation, where weather data plays a significant role in increasing safety and enhancing efficiency. Moreover, NIMET and UBIMET will cooperate in meteorological research and development projects.

UBIMET is one of the long-term agreements holders with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and provides equipment, services and expertise regarding meteorological and hydrological early warning systems for developing countries.
